The Ludicrousness of Privilege.

So, I've had the discussion concerning the quality of "right and wrong" with people before; both times the discussion occurred between me and another man (whether or not their gender merits any thought beyond mild curiosity is currently beyond me), and both of whom were current residents of what can only be described as the most "liberal" city in the country... Portland, Oregon. These men believe there is no such thing as right and wrong. They believe that such a civil construct is more than subjective it is downright arbitrary. Both men were good friends. People whom at one time or another, I called friend. But friendship aside, the idea that you can believe that there is no such thing as right and wrong is simply asinine. And it came to me that only a privileged person, only a person who has never seen, felt, or heard real horror could make such an egregious statement, and make such an outlandish claim. Try telling a parent whose child was molested by a pedophile, there is no such thing as right and wrong. Try telling anyone who suffered through the unmitigated horror of 9/11, or the more recent mass shootings in Colorado, Oregon and Connecticut there is no such thing as right and wrong. My sister, who works in the crime lab here in Portland, OR, witnesses the wrong human beings unleash on each other on a daily, if not hourly, basis. Try telling a husband whose wife was raped, there is no such thing as right and wrong. And on a lesser claim, try telling someone who has endured theft of property there is no such thing as right and wrong.

Only a white male from one of the most privileged countries in the world, living in that countries most liberal city, could ever make such a spectacularly foolish statement. It is a statement for which both men should feel shame, albeit they probably do not believe in the concept of shame, either.
