- and another thing

All right. Here's another thing.

So if you read the Random Thought before this one, you'll be privy to my rage at perfect strangers idly threatening my life, for no apparent reason, whatsoever. But, you know something? That particularly twisted door swings both ways (as they say). Take for instance what happened to me the other night.

I'm driving home after work. It's already dark and well after five o'clock. Avoiding construction on 28th street I take 39th home where I have to turn right on Sandy to get to my gym. I see a bicyclist- no helmet, no lights, white, I-Pod ear phones jammed into his ears- riding along side me on the sidewalk, and I know, beyond a shadow of any meager doubt I might have, that this moron won't even glance my way before he surges onto Sandy- a four-lane, main thoroughfare. So, I watch him carefully, albeit I have the right of way, and the bicyclist does not. Sure enough -- sure as shit -- he does not look left or right, in fact he gives absolutely zero heed to any traffic, of any kind, before he- again, this is against the light- shoots onto the street. If I had NOT been aware of him, he would have barreled straight into my car.

Now I ask you, dear reader, what the hell is that?

There is a certain acumen, a modicum of instinct, if you will, that is prevalent within all animals: mammals, insects, fish, arachnids, marsupials, birds, reptiles, amphibians; what have you; and that instinct is, quite simply, self-preservation; which succinctly means- looking out for one's own ass. This bicyclist, this apparent human being, did not even show the slightest hesitation before bustling headlong and blindly into traffic. He did not even possess the smallest, most basic, primordial instinct that is common in most animals. What he did show was not just an apparent lack of intelligence, but an agonizing disregard for his own safety and well-being. Something I find rather disconcerting.

How can anyone care about my safety, and my well-being, when they don't even care about their own?

If you don't have sense enough to look both ways before you cross the street, you will most certainly reap the painful and possibly fatal rewards. Holy crap! This is as basic as wiping your ass after being on the toilet, and covering your mouth when you cough. Has it come to this? Are we so far gone as a people and a nation that our own citizens don't even have the wit or initiative to take responsibility for their own safety?

Maybe so. Maybe we're so far gone, maybe we've regressed to such an incalculable degree that there is no turning back, and we will eventually de-evolve. Then again, maybe wrong. I hope so .
