The best thing about the "Black Panther" is the story and the characters. I thought they did a wonderful job with those aspects. What lowers the movie, in my humble opinion, is the overwhelming CGI; which leads me to the inevitable conclusion of simply... "meh". (I felt the same way after watching Thor: Ragnarok.) And this is super unfortunate because both the story and the characters are great, and you can tell that they spent a great deal of time developing both. But I just can't get past it... my immense hatred for CGI. Now a giant Rhino, or a dragon, or even some cityscapes or otherly worlds I get, I understand the choice and why it was made. But not to take the time and effort to build sets or find natural places in which to film is unforgivable. And the worst part of CGI is when they take humans and turn them into cartoons. There is something incredibly disingenuous about throwing a cartoon Black Panther on top of a cartoon car careening through a world made up of cartoon images. (And again, so as not to be misunderstood, I repeat... I feel the same way about Thor and the Avengers and The Hobbit movies, and the last two Lord of the Rings films.) And for my part this is the main and sole reason why "Black Panther" does not elevate itself above a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.
I want more down and dirty superhero movies like "Logan".
