Holy crap! Now this is a HORROR movie!
The Black Phone is adapted from Joe Hill's wonderful horror anthology 20th Century Ghosts. And my god... what an adaptation! This movie hits every mark with precision and knowledge- it knows what it is and it knows what it's trying to say. Unlike lesser films like Smile, It Follows, or anything by Ari Aster. The acting is superb. Ethan Hawke turns in a miraculously creepy fucking performance. And the children do an extremely good job. I typically don't like watching children act, because, for the most part, I can always SEE them acting. I can't say that about these two leads- Mason Thames is utterly convincing, and Madeleine McGraw is nothing but astounding. I loved her character!
The Black Phone is everything a horror movie should be. It gets a high, very high... FAST FOOD MEAL review.
