I can't remember the time when Tom Cruise was actually considered a "sex symbol", or "symbol of sex", if you will. I remember him being the "IT" man. I remember "Top Gun", and "Cocktail". But somewhere along the way (it may have been as I crested and then shot down the forty year old mark) Tom Cruise got old, and he ceased to be a "sex symbol". (The old part I can understand, the being a "sex symbol" part I'm gon'a have to imagine. Go figure.) There's nothing inherently wrong with getting old; believe you me... I know, for I am fast approaching forty-four! But I'm not sure if anyone told Tom. I wonder if his agent knows. Tom's 51. And by the way, he looks great! He really does. But he's too damn old to be playing a part like "Jack Reacher"- women want him, men want to be him. Seriously, guys, I could have done without the scene of him strutting around shirt-less, flashing his fifty-one year old pecs. I like Tom Cruise. I do. More often than not, I defend him. Not for being crazy, no, but for being, dare I say it, an actor. I've seen Cruise stretch as an actor: "Interview with the Vampire", "Born on the Fourth of July", "Magnolia". Does he normally play the same guy? Yes. Has he tried other things? Yes. Is he a good shirt-less, bad ass, mysterious drifter that all the women want? No. Not to mention Werner Herzog's bizarre, pointless inclusion as the bizarre, banal, impotent and somewhat pointless character "The zec"; who simply glares at the camera with one good eye, and waggles his amputated digits in front of his hooked nose.
Somewhere inside the story of "Jack Reacher" there is what seemed like a fun story, but with the poor casting, "snooze-fest" pacing, and lack luster direction it just comes off simply as... meh. I give "Jack Reacher" a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.
