I love Rdley Scott. He is my favorite director, and one of the four men I lovingly refer to as my masters (the other three being Joss Whedon, Peter Gabriel, and Ray Bradbury). "The Martian" is Scott's 36th directorial outing and it is up there with his very best. Everything that could be done was done to perfection; e.g. acting, script, direction, cinematography, editing, special effects, musical score. At two hours and twenty four minutes the movie is long, but so well paced and edited that it feels as if it were half that time. Matt Damon is astounding, as is everyone else (Michael Pena stands out for his effortless ability at levity). Not to mention the fact that the movie is actually quite funny, without being forced or stilted. "The Martian" is smart, witty, entertaining, thought-provoking, exciting, emotional, and tense. It is everything "Gravity" attempted to be and more. It gets the highest FOUR COURSE MEAL review I can give.
Thank you Ridley Scott, my master, for once again giving us something we have never seen before. You are a true artist, and well-past deserving an Oscar after such an illustrious career.
