I did not like "Phantom Thread". As a matter of fact, I nearly turned the movie off multiple times. It is well shot and well acted; as with many of Anderson's movies I thought the music was jarring, bombastic, and drew to much attention to itself. But the real reason "Phantom Thread" is NOT the Oscar contender everyone thinks it to be is its lack of humanity. A very arrogant, pretentious, self-absorbed, self-centered, unlikable character moves through the story being arrogant, pretentious, self-absorbed, self-centered and ulikable, and there is no end to it; that is his life. And we are left empty because there is no deeper meaning, no insight into the human mind and emotions. Lewis is fantastic, as always. But I weep for the fact that this trite film was his last film.
"Phantom Thread" is vacuous and pretty, and that is why I give it a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.
