The only other film that I have seen from this writer/director is "The Lobster"; which I adored. "The Lobster" is genuinely weird and crazy and funny and profound. I loved what it had to say about sex and relationships. "The Killing of A Sacred Deer" is a lesser movie. Gone is the humor which helped "Lobster" be something other than simply weird. Gone are the kooky but lovable characters, which caused you to root for them. Gone is the strange society, so bizarre in their attitude towards human relationships, you actually thought you might be watching a science fiction film. No. "Deer" is just simply weird. The situations are weird, the characters are weird, and the story is weird, and unbelievable. I mean, yes... in "Lobster" they could turn people into any animal they wanted, but that sort of fit in the weird, semi-science fiction world. In "Deer" some bizarre and ugly boy has the power to make Stephen Murphy's entire family sick, and then eventually kill them. It doesn't play out properly for me. Again, it just feels weird for weirdness sake. I think if the director had not intentionally set this in a realistic world, but given the world a more fantastical bend to it, it might have worked. As it is, seeing the nonsensical weirdness play out against twenty-first century America just makes it come off as pretentious.
