  BONE TOMAHAWK

"Bone Tomahawk" is fantastic. Especially considering it's the writer/author/director's very first film. The dialogue is as witty, without being pretentious, and character-driven as the like of "True Grit", as well as being period-specific and still retaining it's humanity. The acting is amazing. Matthew Fox, an actor who I have never really believed and who seems to over-act in almost everything, is wonderful! So much so, that I cannot think of another actor inhabiting his character. Kurt Russell- as always- is a stand-out, one of the greatest character actors of our time. Patrick Wilson is great, and Richard Jenkins delivers one of the most subtle and endearing performances that I have seen in years.

With that said, "Bone Tomahawk", is not for everyone. The horror is quite simply- horrific. It is gut-wrenching and visceral, and will turn the stomachs of some audiences. The movie is a "slow burn", taking it's time with characters and circumstances. I love this. But others may not. Two quibbles I have would be one- a lack of real cinematography (which I think the film would have benefited from); but seeing as this is very low budget I can understand the choice. And two- music. The director didn't want the music to indicate emotional reactions from the audience, but at the same time this is an atmospheric film, and I definitely believe it's atmosphere would have been greatly increased by something ambient and subtle as it regards a film score.

"Bone Tomahawk", with minimal flaws and low budget gets my highest review: FOUR COURSE MEAL review.
