I was really eager to watch this movie once I heard it was written by the man who penned Training Days, which for my part is one of the best cop movies around, but when it was over I was left wanting.
First of all the hand held camera thing, from all the different perspectives was not unique, it was grating. I mean, I'll buy the premise that Jake Gyllenhaal's character is filming for school, but they had everyone filming, every gangbanger and street punk was recording everything. Now this might be how it actually is in LA, but it registered false to me. I would have preferred if the director just let the movie become a movie... as in District 9, and stopped worrying about realism in every scene. Point of fact, I never felt like I was watching a movie. I felt like I was watching an over-extended episode of COPS. And god damn it! I wan'a watch a movie. There was no continuity in the story. And I know, that is probably exactly what the director and screenwriter wanted, but that is exactly what makes Training Day such a phenomenal film. Again, make a movie. Not just an episode of COPS. I mean, you're film makers, not reality show producers. Both Michael Pena and Jake Gyllenhaal do fine acting wise, but with such a disjointed story it really is hard to care for them.
Maybe I was hoping for Training Day 2. I don't know. Admittedly, I think End of Watch falls flat on many levels. I wanted to like this movie, but it went no where for me. That's why I'm giving it a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.
