"Into the Wild" is a heartfelt, wonderful movie. And it is, in my massive "career" of gladly watching thousands of films, one of, now two, instances where the movie is not only better than the book, but, strangely enough, far exceeds it. Now, I am not saying that Sean Penn's depiction of a young man doing something, that I believe, many young men, myself included, have thought about doing, is accurate. The book may very well be a more accurate depiction. However, Sean Penn, whether accurately or not, has captured the heartache and humanity of a young man, who is intelligent, misguided, and lost. Not only is the film beautifully shot, but also the acting is superb. What the movie does, that the book does not, is allow us to revel in the relationships that Christopher McCandles garnered along the way. Again, is all this accurate- who knows. It's just that the book was more of a portrait of a man gone mad; which may very well be the case. The movie is, right or wrong, sympathetic, more of a journey story that ends in tragedy.
