All right… now we have The Grudge. And again, I felt left wanting after watching The Grudge. It just was not scary enough for me. That is why it also receives a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.
The Grudge ain't bad, but it ain't great neither. And considering it was done by the same twisted Japanese mind of the man who brought us The Ring (see review) I expected more from this film. Takashi Shimizu did something wonderful with The Ring. However, The Grudge is basically the exact same movie. He even used some of the same images, i.e. weird lookin' chick with long black hair, crawling everywhere. The videotape was exchanged for an evil Japanese house, and some of the scare scenes, especially the noise the female ghost made, were almost laughable. People were mimicking the sound throughout the theatre, and it was not an homage but an outright mockery.
Save your coin, don't go see The Grudge. Instead, rent The Ring. It's a much better story.
p.s. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of the greatest television shows ever produced. Period. I miss it horribly, and hope nothing but the best for its blond star, Sarah Michelle Gellar.
