It's funny - my brother and I went back and forth on this, and he very well may be right, but I still believe that to compare The Illusionist to The Prestige is not only incorrect, but dismissive. Sure, both movies are about magicians, and appear to have fictionally occurred around or during the same time period, however, that's where there similarity ends. The Illusionist, an extremely good movie, all the way round, is a story of love. The Prestige is a gritty, and much darker look at the price of obsession. They are completely, in theme and tone, two separate movies all together.
I give The Prestige a FOUR COURSE MEAL review.
I enjoyed The Prestige quite a bit. I thought the acting, as usual, by Christian Bale and cast was "spot on", the direction flawless, and the story not only well written, but also well told. Furthermore, I particularly enjoyed HOW the story was told, through a brilliant and well-crafted use of journal entries and flashbacks. Yes, this is a dark movie. Yes, it is darker than The Illusionist. The Prestige is more like street magic, performed in a back alley, under the glare of oil lanterns. Both films deserve much more than a mere glance, and both deserve much more attention and accolades than they received upon their respective releases in the theatres.
