  DJANGO UNCHAINED

With much surprise, and even a little chagrin, I really enjoyed Tarantino's latest, "Django Unchained". I would even go so far as to say that this is one of his best scripts, and best directorial effort since "Pulp Fiction". Admittedly, I have not been a fan of Tarantino of late, and even before then my favorite Tarantino script was a movie he did NOT direct, the astounding "True Romance". I never liked the "Kill Bill's". His "Grind House" efforts were simply cut-rate slop with great actors, and "Ingloerious Basterds" was simply a bloody, confused, schizophrenic mess.

"Django" I'm happy to say is something different. On the surface it's a simple revenge story. You know where the stories going, and you pretty much know how it's going to end up. But what makes it unique, what makes it so goddamn entertaining are the characters and the dialogue; things for which, until he got too big for his "britches", Quentin Tarantino was highly regarded. Christoph Waltz is, true to form, magnificent. (Refer to my review of "Basterds", Waltz is the best and only reason to watch that movie.) Jamie Foxx is understated yet powerful. And Leonardo DiCaprio turns in what may be his best performance to date. The other thing that Tarantino intentionally left out, and one of the things that bugged me the most about "Basterds", as well as "Death Proof" and on a lesser degree "Kill Bill", was messing with the film. Whether it be CG burn marks, cartoon graphics, changing from color to black and white and then back to color again, or warped negatives, gone are those heavy-handed attempts to make the movie something it is not. Tarantino rightfully allows the movie to be, with no inserted craziness, allowing the characters, the story, and the actors to shine.

Bloody, witty, violent, inappropriate, exploitive, shocking... say what you will, but for my part, "Django Unchained" is a hell of a ride! That's why I give it a FAST FOOD MEAL review.
