"The Losers", a film by Sylvain White, failed miserably for me. Based on a comic, which I've been told by a very reliable source is great, the film attempted to be gritty, cool, and sexy. It truly was none of those things, more to the point, "The Losers" was antiseptically clean (kind of like watching the eighties television series "The A-Team"), somewhat moronic, and about as sexy as a "Care Bear". As with many of the films produced these days I wanted more - more violence, more realism, more sex. The script is laughable, the direction sporadic, the editing jumpy and far too pervasive, and the dialogue, again attempting to be ultra cool, was just silly. Basically, none of it worked for me. Take the film "Kick Ass"- violent and inappropriate on many levels, it knew what it was and reveled in that, and you and I, the viewers, either got on board or inevitably never took the ride. "The Losers" tried to be everything to everyone- a family film, an action film, a sexy film (but not too sexy!), a realistic film, a witty movie. It never came to any focus, nor did it ever find its footing. There is an absolutely ridiculous scene between Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Zoe Saldana (who looks all of ninety-five pounds), as they battle it out in an apartment that catches on fire. They're breaking chairs over each other, throwing one another against the walls, and making allusions towards sex. All of it is dull, mindless, and worst of all boring. And then there's Jason Patrick. I have truly enjoyed his work. I think he's wonderful in "Lost Boys", and outstanding in "The Beast", however, he has got to be one of the worst and whiniest villains to ever grace the screen. There is, unfortunately, not an inch of him that is intimidating in the least.
"The Losers" gets a RICE CAKE review.
