  THE HILLS HAVE EYES

The Hills Have Eyes gets a high FAST FOOD MEAL review from me.

Admittedly, I was not expecting much. I thought for sure it would be simply another pedantic remake of an old horror movie, which, at the time, was very good and explosive and disturbing. I was wrong. Then I realized that not only was this movie penned by the two twisted geniuses that brought us the wet splendor of High Tension, but also directed by them. It's movies like The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension, Hostel, and to a lesser extent the "Tartan Asia" films that are coming out of Korea- namely Old Boy, Audition, and 3 Extremes- that truly give me hope for the genre.

The Hills Have Eyes is disturbing. I am impressed when a director can make my skin crawl. It takes a lot for me, being that I am well versed, and somewhat, jaded concerning Horror movies (been there, saw that). "The Hills" succeeds on many visceral levels. Not to mention that there is some absolutely brilliant C.G.I. work. Again, I have seen many films, and to date, I can't remember ever NOT knowing when something in a movie was C.G.I. Happily, I've been proven wrong. There's a lot of computer work in "The Hills". However, I couldn't see a lot of it, and that is a testament to the director.

"The Hills" is not for everyone. (Indeed, if you see the unrated version on DVD, most people won't be able to get past the "trailer" scene.) "The Hills" is raw and powerful and disconcerting and gross and rampant with abnormal behavior, brain-dead mutants, and chillingly vacuously landscapes. It will make question ever wanting to go on a "road-trip" ever again.
