Not sure how, exactly, but I missed this film. "This is England" is a coming of age story set in the mid 80's in London, and it is as good a film as the best of them. Bolstered by commanding performances, an excellent script, and masterful direction... "This is England" ranks up there with "Romper Stomper", "Good Fellas", and "Train Spotting" as one of the best dramas I've seen in years.
On a special note, Stephen Graham, who I was first introduced to in "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" turns in one of those ground-breaking, career-making performances. Think Russel Crowe in "Romper Stomper". Eric Bana in "Chopper". Or even, Tom Hardy in "Bronson". He is mesmerizing, and he commands every scene with an ambiguity that is hard to put into words.
Watch "This is England". It gets a well deserved FOUR COURSE MEAL review.
