  Open Water

You know, I might have given Open Water a better review if I actually thought it was a movie. It isn't. What it is, is more like some wanna-be documentary on the evils of being stupid and not paying attention to what you are doing, especially if what you are doing is scuba diving in shark infested waters miles from any land. Now some of you will like it for its rough, painfully obvious independent vibe. But I cannot. Its utter lack of anything resembling a story arc, or character development, or well-written dialogue, or good acting forfeits any love I might have for the inherent terror of the situation the director is exploring. The characters are hollow and overplayed, and we the audience are given no time to actually love, and or, hate them before they are rather unceremoniously deposited into their unenviable situation.

The real gem about this very easily forgotten film is the courage of the actors to actually swim with live, wild sharks. Something your humble narrator would never, as long as he was alive and cognizant, ever do.
