I give "Underworld" a FAST FOOD RATING.
I gotta tell ya', I just saw "Underworld", and you know what? I freakin' loved it!
Yah, all right… it isn't perfect, but still I thought it was wholly entertaining and engrossing. This is one of the movies that truly, has obvious flaws, but it's so God damn much fuckin' fun… I really don't care. If you see it for what it is- a Vampire and Lycan story set in a fantasy world of perpetual night- you will enjoy it as much as I did. And, I might add, my lovely Mel and my good friend Andy both thought the movie warranted a FAST FOOD RATING.
The costumes are awesome. The gore… great! The sets… magnificent. The story… quite imaginative and epic in its scope and themes. Some of the actors were perfect; case in point, Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Michael Sheen, and Bill Nighy. Others were… well, not so perfect; namely Shane Brolly, some wanna-be model strutting around a cool set, ensconced in cool clothes, looking through cool contact lenses, and within himself and what little he brought to the character "Kraven", not a single ounce of anything that could ever be construed as "cool". The story is fantastic; with a rich, deep history reminiscent of the first "Lord of the Rings" and a plot arc that steels greatly, albeit very convincingly and engagingly, from William Shakespeare "his-self", all this leading to an ending, which harkens back to "Hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet". Wonderful.
I for one was thoroughly entranced and entertained by "Underworld". Granted, it's not for everyone. It might be a tad bit too long. The lines might not be as cool as they needed to be. But it was fun, running red with blood and teeth and truly terrifying werewolves and characters that I really did care about, excluding "Kraven" of course.
