  MATCHSTICK MEN

Ridley Scott… what can one say about this man, this director that hasn't been said before. I look at Ridley and his films the way I look at Ray Bradbury and his books. Ridley is a master, a genius, and humble, hard worker. The greatest thing I can say about him is to watch any of his films and you will see, guaranteed, something you've never seen before. Whether it is a camera angle, an intricate cut, lighting, acting, cinematography, editing, directing… whatever, it will be new and innovative. To date Ridley has helmed and directed what is arguably the greatest Science Fiction film ever- "Blade Runner", as well as the greatest horror movie ever- "Alien".

His newest work, "Matchstick Men", is no exception. I give "Matchstick Men", a FOUR COURSE MEAL RATING.

Everyone is good in this, from Nicolas Cage, playing a lovable, but brilliant, con man, to Sam Rockwell who plays a less lovable, but even more brilliant, con man, to Alison Lohman- cute, innocent, and convincing. Now granted, this is a different movie than is usual fare for Ridley Scott, being a serious character based film rather than some sweeping epic. However, he broaches this subject matter as he has with everything else in his career: with deft power and subtle professionalism.

See this movie. And while you're at it, see these as well.

BLADE RUNNER- Rutger Hauer in the performance of his career, with special effects that are far superior than, and pre-date, CGI.

ALIEN- Sigourney Weaver, also in the performance of her career, and one of the greatest horror films ever. Period.

LEGEND- a moving, breathing, cinematic work of art. Tim Curry is brilliant.

GLADIATOR- Russell Crowe becomes a movie star. Mind-numbing action sequences. Terrifying evil from Joaquin Phoenix.

BLACK HAWK DOWN- once again, mind-numbing action sequences. In-your-face realistic look at conventional warfare.
