I recently saw "The Room", the movie upon which "The Disaster Artist" is based. And yes, it is horrible. It is horrifically horrible and nonsensical and weird. So, I thought watching it might prepare me for "The Disaster Artist". It did. In fact, watching "The Room" is much more interesting than watching "The Disaster Artist", which is not necessarily a good thing. "The Disaster Artist" feels immature, almost as if James Franco was picking on a retarded kid, it felt self-indulgent and narcissistic and mean. It doesn't answer any of the burning questions about the misguided mind behind the original film, it just pokes fun at the original. The original film is popular and infamous because the writer/director/producer was so clueless and naive as to think he could make a good film, and his delusions regarding his ability to act are almost as big as his budget. Again, watching it feels like laughing at someone who is mentally challenged. "The Disaster Artist" also feels typically like Hollyweird masturbatory vanity.
"The Disaster Artist" to me asks two questions. Number one- why? Why even bother making a movie about a horrible movie? None of it is overtly interesting or compelling. And number two- why has it received such glowing reviews? There is nothing that good about either films. And at the very least, the original is so fucking bad that it is somewhat fascinating.
I give "The Disaster Artist" my lowest review, a RICE CAKE review.
