"Annihilation" is based on a novel trilogy called "The Southern Reach". The trilogy is interesting. I loved the first book: it has aspects of Lovecraft and the tv show "Lost". However, I found the second and third novels to be trite, slow, and pretentious. "Annihilation" the movies is not the book, and "Annihilation" the book sure as shit ain't the movie. Both have aspects that resemble each other, yet both are also different enough to be almost two separate stories. The movie is more horrific than the book, and yet it still holds a great deal of the unknown and bizarre; which the book captures so well. (How do you combat a biological event seeking to change the very structure of cells?) I do think the books would make an incredible television series, but I did find myself fully engaged with the film. Probably because it was so deftly directed by the man who wrote and directed "Ex Machina". I truly enjoyed "Annihilation", a lot more than I thought I would. There are some genuinely creep moments, and there are some fantastic visuals, both CGI as well as a good deal of practical effects. Therefore I give the film a solid FAST FOOD MEAL review.
