The movie "Ready Player One" has no heart.
Based on the book of the same name, I was not sure what I would think, because, with all honesty, the book is fun, but extremely poorly written. I will admit to enjoying myself and the read, however the author, Ernest Cline, avoids all large themes and goes for the cheap thrill, making the novel amusing but about as deep as a Dixie cup. Enter Steven Spielberg who makes the grand decision to eschew everything inherently entertaining about the novel simply to pander to the needs and wants of Millennials and children. Seriously. The book is a grand ode... a homage to all things 80's (which would probably explain my enjoyment) and Spielberg, I think, unwisely removes many, if not all, of the 80's references; thereby thoroughly vivisecting the story down to a helplessly mediocre crumb, a tidbit of what some producer probably told him would sell. No heart. No feeling. No style. Vacuous even. A hallow shell of what was a fragile carapace to begin with. I wasn't expecting much from the film, and unfortunately, it was worse than I thought it might be..
"Ready Player One" has no heart, therefore it has no foundation upon which to build. It gets a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.
