  X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE

X-Men Origins: Wolverine gets a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.

There's nothing overtly wrong with this film, but at the same time, there is also nothing overtly right. It's a fairly boring attempt to bring the Weapon X story to the screen. Hugh Jackman is a competent actor, albeit his crowning achievement to date was his turn in The Prestige. Truly, if all you do is go to see Jackman flex and growl you will be more than adequately pleased. It's the direction of Wolverine that really, for my taste, falls flat. We never get to see or learn about many of the characters, most of which are paper-like facsimiles of their comic book selves. (They turned Wolverine into a romanticized; "manly-man" that seemed to have bound- biceps straining- straight out of a Judith Krantz novel.) All the C.G.I. was superfluous, the action fairly silly, and some of the simple, dramatic tension; again very laborious and romantic. (There were two scenes that I counted, where Wolverine did his Hollywood "Noooooooo!") Except for a Mutant he simply kneels down roars his torment and sorrow as the camera pans emotionally up, and away from him.

All and all, the movie felt flat, uninspired, and downright stupid. If it weren't for Liev Schreiber's fantastic, and understated performance playing Victor Creed the movie would have a been a total let down.
