Lord of War, the movie starring Nicolas Cage, is very, very good. I give Lord of War a FOUR COURSE MEAL review.
I knew I would like this movie from the very first scene, which follows the making of a bullet from production to its inevitable, grisly end as a weapon of death spouted from the barrel of an assault rifle. Lord of War is intelligent and ambiguous, it is violent and yet sensitive, it is real and honest and shocking. I think the problem with Lord of War, and the main reason it was not seen anywhere amongst the Oscar's, was the fact that it was billed incorrectly. This movie was advertised as an action flick. And if there's one thing Lord of War is not, that would be an action flick. This is drama folks; pure, unadulterated drama, at times both thought provoking and shocking. Cage's character is not necessarily nice, nor is he morally outstanding, yet he has an intelligence and a wit that makes you feel for him, as well as the ability to talk so sagely about the commerce of gun-running that he makes you believe that there is no difference between him or any other man plying their wares. It's just that his "wares" kill.
Go see Lord of War, and thank me later.
