So... I've been thinking about 2019's "Hellboy", and of course, because it's impossible not to, comparing it to Del Toro's two films- "Hellboy" and "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army". (Maybe it's because I recently re-watched "The Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth"; both AMAZING movies.) And there is an intrinsic ingredient missing from the remake/reboot/what have you. And that ingredient is most specifically- heart. Del Toro's films have heart. Hellboy is pining away for his lost love, Liz, who also happens to be a "fire starter". Not to mention his undying and evinced love for his father, played exceptionally by the incomparable, John Hurt, whose own love for his magnificent creatures is equally evinced.
The reboot has no heart. It's more closely linked to the comics, but doesn't have the depth or the profundity of Del Toro's films. So, I'm gonna change my review. I was entertained by the reboot, but it doesn't have any of the beauty, any of the wonder, any of the imagination, and any of the heart of its predecessors; which leads me to ask the question... why? Why remake it?
"Hellboy", finally, gets a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.
