In 1987 (the year I graduated high school) Brian De Palma directed one of the, arguably, greatest gangster movies all time, "The Untouchables". If you've never seen this film I urge you to do so. Each scene is a crafted masterpiece propelled forward by a phenomenal cast, focused direction, and well written story and dialogue. It's about as good as it gets.
Fast forward 26 years and Rueben Fleischer, the brilliant director behind "Zombie Land", has directed the exact same movie. I'm not joking. It is, note for note, character for character, the exact same film, except far less engaging and intelligent as the aforementioned "The Untouchables". Sure they ARE different characters, but they DO take, almost identically, the same path as the characters in "Untouchables".
Do yourself a favor. Forget "Gangster Squad". Instead, go rent, or download "The Untouchables".
"Gangster Squad" gets a RICE CAKE review.
