To be honest, I never really wanted to see this movie. However, and at the same time, I was somewhat intrigued by it. Thus we watched. And I found that my initial trepidation was completely warranted. "Don Jon" is bad, and weird. Strange even. Good for Mr. Gordon-Levitt who wrote, starred, and directed the movie. But this movie was a directionless piece of film-school garbage, appearing to be driven by a gaggle of rank amateurs. Furthermore, it appeared as if Levitt's only impetus to make this film was to grope and make-out with Scarlett Johansson; which, as far as reasons to make a movie go, ain't necessarily a bad one. But again this in and of itself does not make a good movie, not even a passable film. "Don Jon" feels as if it never gets its' footing: neither a comedy nor drama. It felt to me as if the movie was an hour and a half advertisement for pornhub.com. Not to mention the fact that to prepare for said film it appeared as if the entire cast simply watched season after season of "Jersey Shore". There was no depth, which inevitably made the movie feel flat, lifeless, and dull.
Mr. Levitt is considered a consummate actor, imbued with a mixture of raw talent and intelligence. "Don Jon" is a low-brow romantic comedy that isn't funny, and only barely scrapes the surface of what may or may not be pornography addiction. Therefore, I give "Don Jon' my worst review: RICE CAKE review.
