Well, what can I say about the movie, DRIVE that has not already been said? I loved it. I thought it was one of the most beautifully shot films I have seen in decades; each shot literally orchestrated and executed to be stunning; from the angle to the filter to the lighting- absolutely exquisite. The music is the kind of ambient, tonal notes that hearken back to my youth, a wonderful time of music and books and movies. Eighties movies like THE HITCHER, or THE BEAST (the music to both of which were composed by one of my favorites, Mark Isham). I loved DRIVE. It is violent, passionate, and cinematic. If I had one critique it would be this- it is simply derivative, not only embracing eighties cinema, but a full blown facsimile. But as I already stated, I love eighties films. This one and only critique is the reason as to why I am waffling about its rating. On the one hand, DRIVE is so entertaining and so exceptionally done that it deserves a FOUR COURSE MEAL review. On the other hand, it ably rips off Michael Mann, Miami Vice, and TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A., which would lead me more towards a high FAST FOOD MEAL review.
Officially, I will give the film a FOUR COURSE MEAL review. But I just do not know. And maybe, I will leave it at that.
