"Den of Thieves" wanted to be a good movie. And you know what? It almost succeeded. However, there is a glaring, jarring if you will, similarity between "Den of Thieves" and Michael Mann's excellent movie "Heat". If you've seen "Heat" (which you should, if you have not) you do not, under any circumstances, need to see "Den of Thieves". "Den of Thieves" is in fact redundant. "Den of Thieves" is, unfortunately, nearly a direct copy of "Heat". Yes it's the twenty-first century, not the twentieth. Yes, the characters are ever so slightly different, but it is only a facade, for at its core "Den of Thieves"- thematically, structurally, and dramatically- is "Heat": I might ad a far BETTER movie. I find this redundancy to be especially prevalent in the horror genre, where young directors and writers appear as if they're so enamored (deservedly so) of 80's horror movies that they are not simple homages at all, but, as mentioned, direct facsimiles.
Everyone does a fine job acting and all that, but the movie cannot escape its evinced plagiarism. For that reason I give "Den of Thieves" a BIRTHDAY CAKE review.
