  THE WOMAN IN BLACK

I liked The Woman in Black a great deal. I want to give it a FOUR COURSE MEAL review, but because of its lack of originality, I think it deserves a very, very high FAST FOOD MEAL review. Now, why not my highest review? Because essentially, we have seen all this stuff before. A man goes to an isolated house, outside an isolated town, and discovers that not only the house, but the entire town is being haunted. But why did I like the movie so much, if there was nothing original to it? Well, The Woman in Black does everything so damn well. It is a classic homage to practical effects, and ghost stories. Shady objects in the background move, distorted objects in the foreground twitch. There seemed to be very little C.G.I., and what little there was, was executed with a subtlety and sensitivity rarely seen in modern film making. Not to mention, the undeniable aspect that at one point in the film, near the end, I got creeped out. Do you know, dear reader, how long it has been since a movie has truly creeped me out? It has been years. Nay, decades. And I cannot explain to you why I got creeped out. All I know, is that the hackles rose on the back of my neck, and I felt a fuzzy, disconcerting, yet fun, feeling of dread rush through me. Wonderful! I am so jaded with most movies. I have seen so much, and experienced more, that it takes a lot to do that to me. Not to mention, the startling fact that the ending is neither contrite, nor hackneyed. And with that, I realize, The Woman in Black, does not deserve a high FAST FOOD MEAL review, it deserves a FOUR COURSE MEAL review.

Go see this film. It is wonderful. Oh hey! And Daniel Radcliffe is fantastic. Outstanding work.
