Hard to rate this one. So, I saw it. I loved it. Is there anything special about IT? Yes. The technology of the digital 3-D is astounding, and well worth the exorbitant price of admission. The story is not original, but by no means, bad or trite. It is, in point of fact, an age old story, well worth its weight in celluloid. Whether your compare it to: Fern Gully, Princess Mononoke, Dances With Wolves, Shogun -- what have you. It really does not matter. What matters is how the movie affects you emotionally. It was, for me, evocative on an emotional level. Are the Mercs cliche? Yes. Are the indigenous peoples of Pandora noble? Yes. Does the movie drag on, even just a little? Yes. However, I liked it. Is it oscar worthy? Hell yes. But only concerning the technology. On a whole "Hurt Locker" is my pick for best film of 2009.
