"The Lobster" has to be, without a doubt, one of the most original films I have ever seen. The only thing I can think to compare it to (as it concerns the ambiguous nature of originality), is "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer". There's so much to like about this film: the acting, the cinematography, the pacing; I have never seen such an amazing metaphor on the "ambiguous nature" of love and relationships; the dark comedy aspects... it is quite brilliant. And I loved it. With that said, "The Lobster" ain't for everyone. It's weird. And I'm not talking hipster-doofus pretend weird, the kind you witness and shake your head at or roll your eyes. I'm talking inherently weird, the kind you back away from while keeping your eyes steadily trained on kind of weird, for fear it just might bite you in the ass, or even less savory, under world parts. That is probably another reason why I liked the film so much, it isn't trying to be anything... it simply is- weird and funny and tragic and dark.
Like I said, "The Lobster" is not for everyone. If you can't get past the outlandish premise and the intentional "dead pan" delivery of the acting and the humor you probably won't like it. But for my part, "The Lobster" gets my highest review: a FOUR COURSE MEAL review.
