Watched two more Oscar nominated movies this weekend, the first one being "Gravity". And you know... with all the hype and fervor going into this film, I gotta say I was substantially underwhelmed. With everything that happens in this movie you would think it would elevate itself into something more dramatic, but it doesn't. Pure and simple, it's a survival film. Which I'm more than fine with, but at some point if I don't care about the female lead fighting for her life to stay alive in space you have failed. And I didn't. I couldn't care one squat about weak-stomached, stupid, suicidal, (SUICIDAL! I'm pretty sure you don't get to be an astronaut if you're suicidal. I mean, they go through many... MANY psychological evaluations.) and whining Dr. Ryan Stone, and even less about George Clooney's character. Part of the problem was Sandra Bullock who did not once convince me that she was a doctor, let alone an astronaut. (I couldn't help thinking that Charlize Theron wouldn't have been a better choice.) Part of the problem was the asinine script the actors had to work with. And part of the problem was the lack of context; if you, as Alfonso Cuaron the director, want me to care about your characters you have to provide us with some back story... something. Anything! A flashback would have been nice. Even a little bit longer movie concerned more with story and character than blowing my briefs off with over-the-top C.G. special effects. And therein lies the rub; this is an effects laden film, and in the end, not one second of it matters because there is no connection between the viewer and the characters. I couldn't have cared less if "Dr. Stone" lived or die. And that for a survival film is a complete failure.
If you want sci-fi watch "Moon", or even the more recent "Europa Report", which I might ad has more depth and profundity (and probably half the budget of "Gravity") than one minute of "Gravity".
I give "Gravity" my lowest review, a RICE CAKE review. Shit! You might balk at this, but both myself and my girlfriend would probably have turned the movie off if we weren't watching it with a dear friend.
